Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among American adult sand is the most common disease in the world. It is an infection of the gums, and ultimately the bone, caused by bacteria that have become embedded around the roots of teeth. This bacterial infection causes the gums to become swollen, tender and inflamed, and causes separation ot he gums from the teeth creating gum pockets. This infection of the gum and bone results in destruction of the bone that holds the teeth in place and ultimately can result in the loss of teeth.

At the comprehensive New Patient Exam visit, we will do a thorough gum exam. We will discuss the various factors associated with gum disease, and will outline a treatment plan to help the patient get their gums healthy. Our hygienist will demonstrate techniques for removing plaque from all surfaces of the patient’s teeth. After treatment with our hygienist, on a subsequent visit, we will re-evaluate the patient’s gum condition and refer the patient to a periodontist for gum surgery if necessary.
